Screaming Jelly Babies
Jelly Babies were first sold as "Peace Babies"
after the First World War. The name was
changed to Jelly babies after the Second World
War when continued peace seemed unlikely. A
popular school science experiment involves
dropping Jelly babies into a test tube containing
a chemical that makes them scream and burst
into flames.

The Candy That Was Invented by
Accident
In 1899 an English salesman tripped and
spilled a mixture of candy samples that he
was showing to a client. As he cleaned up the
spill the samples became all mixed up but he
made the sale when the client saw the mix
and liked it. The company, Bassetts, marketed
the accidental creation as "Liquorice Allsorts".
